Programming Games

Programming games are a different genre of game. Instead of selecting your option as your turn comes, you built a program to play for you. Depending on the game you want to play, you can do a small brute force script, or a large complex script that takes into account every option and 3 moves onwards to be ahead of the game.

Sounds easy to play, but how about create? I’m trying to create a programming game with a PHP based server. The point of this is to make it easy to set up anywhere. The server has one problem though, it relies on the players for updates.

Here is my game idea (no idea if it has been done before): Client connects with username and password, gets an ID and Session ID in return. It then calls for an update to load the map. Upon loading the Map the player sends asking if it is there turn. Upon getting a number larger than 1 (and equal to the time remaining) they can respond with another call. They can move or attack with one of their pieces. They can only move or attack with one piece each turn, so the strategy they set has to protect all their pieces while attacking other people’s.

The damage an attack does to it’s opponent is dependent on how close they are to each other. If the AI fails to respond in time they are skipped, giving the builder little time to fix problems in game.

A couple of other features are planned to make the game seem more realistic, like a chat, so the Artificial intelligence can harmlessly taunt each other, or the Coders can talk about the decisions they built there bot on.

At the moment I’m still working on the Logon script and database entry, along with the maps for in-game. At most a 50x50 map will be able to accommodate 8 players, but the biggest problem will be finding them.

I’ll try and post an update on the code tomorrow aswell as the start if the Bot API if anyone wants to stress test it when it is complete.

My Budgie Guido. He is vicious and doesn’t like being handled much.

AwkMom, facebook battles and sleep.

At the moment I’m quite tired. Today I spent a few hours working on AwkMom.Com, swimming and having fun with my cousins. I missed out on a small LAN today, so I’m pretty much homebound for gaming.

AwkMom.Com is coming along nicely. I need to add the comment system and do up the interface a bit more. I also need to add some error prevention. If you head over to http://www.AwkMom.com/ you can click the banner to register and start adding. If you find errors, can you use the contact form at http://www.pommers.org/ to submit an error report.

I haven’t added facebook posting yet, or the ability to set a screen name, but I am currently working on it (as it uses similar code to the custom like button). I also need to work on making some of the website database driven, so it will be easier to make a small network from the one setup.

I’ve been behind on sleep as I spent thursday night studying. Friday morning was an English in class essay followed immediately by a Chemistry test. I am confident that I did well in both, as I had 5 well structured paragraphs for my essay, all relating to the question and I managed to finish the Chemistry test with all questions answered, only one or two of them guessed.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. ~MP

Also, facebook battle: Alex wins. Simon looses. End of. Now please don’t post about debates where it will enter my feed ever again.

Year 12 and a New Website.

Year 12 is keeping me away from both gaming and coding. So far my year has been great, with the exception of a week long cold, tons of homework and the sheering heat.

I’m working on a new website, centered around Facebook. You’ve probably seen all of those “like sites” that end up littering your news feed with spam, mine is going to act differently.

Updates, Gaming and whatnot.

Again, haven’t bee here in a while. Ages in fact.  I have a new PC, and I’m only $100 away from paying it off.I’ve also been working on my website and playing games.

Specs of my new machine:
Case: CoolerMaster CM 690 II Advanced with Window
Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E
Processor: Intel Core i7 950
RAM: Corsair CMP6GX3M3A1600C8 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3
Graphics Card: HIS ATI Radeon HD5770 IceQ 5 Turbo
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-B123A 12X Blu-ray DVD Combo Drive
Primary Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB WD1002FAEX
Power Supply: CoolerMaster GX 750W PSU
Total Cost: $1500 Including Shipping

I’ve also got a heap of steam games now (I can play them all as well) including retro ones like “Half-Life” and “Team Fortress Classic”, although I’ve spent most of my play time in Team Fortress 2.

I’m still working on my website, but most of the changes you will see will be subtle, but I am going to get the Programs and Websites sections up and running as soon as I can.

Speaking of programs, one of the guys I work with has created a program specifically for Solid State drive tweaking. SSD Tweaker is a great program and has a stack of features.  Together we have come up with an idea which will be useful for all smart phone users.

I’ll try and Blog Again,

I Fail At Blogging

I just don’t have anything retro to write about at the moment. School is boring (1 year left until I’m done) and work is as usual.

School-wise I’m busy. I have 2 assignments due tomorrow for English, 2 Investigations on Tuesday (Physics and Specialist) and a test on Thursday for Specialist. I’ve finished Year 11, and my school has decided that we start Year 12 now to give us more time for the courses. We also know our Year 12 ball theme, Masquerade, and my sister has offered to make me a Batman mask for it. :D

Web-wise I’m working on a website for my sister’s friend which is taking all my coding time. The new style for my website was designed by one of my friends, but coded by me, but I still haven’t finished coding it. My forum presence has dropped a bit because of my schoolwork.

Computer-wise it’s going. My PC is slowly dying. Every second boot ends with a BSOD and now even basic games end up lagging my machine. If you can spare some money, can you please donate because otherwise I’ll be without a workstation.

Server-wise I’m looking to get a VPS. The one I’m looking at is 250GB storage and 500GB bandwidth for $72.00 for 2 years, which is cheaper that what I would pay to put my lower power Physical Server into a server room…
